Sandwiches are unarguably one of the best inventions of mankind. It’s a quick, easy, on-the-go, completely customizable, wholesome meal that you can eat from breakfast through dinner. There’s bread, your choice of protein, veggies, condiments, and sometimes, cheese. What more can you ask for when you need a filling meal? Our favorite fictional characters also feel the same way about sandwiches. Or, Joey Tribbiani’s meatball sub wouldn’t be as iconic as his character. Would Sally Albright get the same pleasure from anything else other than a pastrami sandwich?

Let’s dig into some of our favorite between-the-bread recipes. Some of them might make your mouth water, but some of them might make you cringe. We promise each of them will make your mouth water because each one of them is legen…wait for it…dary!

One of the most famous scenes in the history of romcom, this classic movie features Meg Ryan as Sally Albright sitting in Katz’s, New York City deli, getting the best pleasure out of a pastrami sandwich. As every bite delights her mind and body, making her moan with joy, her date, Harry Burns (Billy Crystal), and the entire restaurant watch her. Finally, a woman can’t hold back the temptation and says the most famous line ever, “I’ll have what she’s having.” Interpret it as you wish, but this pastrami on rye has become one of the most iconic sandwiches since then. With its delectable concoction, it won’t be a surprise if Joey Tribbiani’s love for this sandwich came from Sally’s reactions.

What’s in it: Pastrami, mustard, mayonnaise, pickles, and rye bread.

How far would you go to save your favorite sandwich? Well, Joey holds them one level over his women. But Ross is ready to fight tooth and nail with his boss, even if it means costing his job. The Friends episode with “The One With Ross’s Sandwich” sees the Geller boy losing his mind over his favorite “Moist-Maker” sandwich, which is made from Thanksgiving leftovers. So, when it goes missing from his office fridge, and he later discovers his boss had eaten it, his high-pitched screaming of “My sandwich” echoes far and wide. And thus moist-maker becomes one of the favorite sitcom sandwiches ever!

What’s in it: Roast turkey, stuffing, and bread dipped in gravy (hence the moistness).

Who needs the Joker when you have the perfect sandwich to make you happy? Gotham’s wild child, Harley Quinn, pines for the simple but delicious combination of egg and bread. And why wouldn’t you? When you spend your last dollar on your favorite breakfast and then cops start chasing you, throwing it off your hand and finally landing on the concrete road. Losing the sandwich makes all emotions come rushing and yolk breaking is almost metaphorical to her heartbreak. Surprisingly, the sandwich steals the show in that particular scene, despite the neon-tinted, delightfully chromatic setting.

What’s in it: Eggs, bacon, cheese, and just a dash of hot sauce, stuffed between half a baguette.

HIMYM is a show that thrives on its food and drinks, thanks to Jason Segel’s Marshall Ericksen and his love for tracking down the best food in the city. So, when he sets out to find out the best burger in town, with the rest of the gang, it turns out to be an adventure of a lifetime. Marshall doesn’t remember anything about the place except that it was a small diner with a green door and a red neon sign, tucked away in some alley. After a series of hilarious events, they finally reach there and experience the mouthwatering delight. What is most unforgettable about the burger is how Marshall describes it.

What’s in it: Sesame bun, beef patty, lettuce, tomato, pickle, mustard, and onions.

That’s how some sandwiches have become so iconic that they are often synonymous with the show or movie where they are featured. Which one of these is your favorite?
